Banana Payasam | How to make Banana Payasam

Banana Payasam or Banana Kheer is a sweet recipe that can be prepared for any occasion at our home. This also suits as a snack time recipe since we use Banana in it. When you crave any sweet dishes, you can simply prepare this Banana Payasam and enjoy it. It has only minimal ingredients such as milk, banana, ghee and sugar. But trust me, this tastes amazing. Almond paste is an optional ingredient. You can either add or skip it. I have used brown sugar for this Banana kheer but you can use white sugar as well.

I used Green banana (Pachchai Vaazhai) for this recipe. You can use any of the bananas of your choice. Making payasam out of Banana is my long time wish. Since my mom hates dishes made of bananas, I was not able to prepare this Banana Payasam. But now, my husband loves all varieties of bananas and he likes whatever I make using Banana. This gave me a chance to try Banana Payasam. Though I had few ideas about making Banana Kheer, I have gone through few YouTube videos. When I started to make this kheer, I was unsure about the result but the final result stunned me. It tasted delicious and it was beyond my imagination. I was on cloud nine when it tasted well since I was expecting much about the result. So try this Banana Payasam and let me know how it turns out for you.

INGREDIENTS FOR MAKING BANANA PAYASAM

TO MAKE ALMOND PASTE

  • 10 to 12 Almonds
  • 1/2 cup Boiled & Chilled Milk

TO MAKE BANANA PAYASAM

  • 1 1/2 cup Boiled & Chilled Milk
  • 2 Ripen Banana
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 Cardamoms
  • Almond Paste
  • 3 tbsp Ghee
  • Few Cashwes & Raisins

STEPS FOR MAKING BANANA PAYASAM

To make Banana payasam, first, prepare Almond Paste. Boil the almonds in half a cup of water to peel the skin easily. Once it boiled, let it come to room temperature. Then peel the skin and add the almonds into the jar. Pour a little quantity of milk and blend it into a smooth paste.

Next, chop two banana and mash them with a masher or ladle.

Next, heat 2 tbsp of ghee in a wide pan. Add cashews and raisins. Roast them until they turn golden brown. Keep them aside.

Then, in the same pan, add mashed banana. Saute them on medium flame until the raw smell of the banana goes off. Once the banana is cooked, you can feel the cooked banana smell. Also, the colour of the banana changes slightly.

Add banana paste.

Once the banana is cooked completely, add boiled and chilled milk to it. Gently mix the banana and milk. Bring it to a boil.

Then add cardamoms. Mix them.

Then add Almond paste. Gently mix them. You can also add cashews to this paste. By adding this paste, the payasam will become thick.

Next, add sugar to it. I have used brown sugar but, you can use white sugar, country sugar (Naatu Sarkarai). Gently mix the sugar. You can adjust the sweetness as per your taste.

Once the sugar is dissolved, add the roasted cashews and raisins to it. Mix them.

QUICK TIPS

  • You can also add cashews to the almonds paste. This will make payasam even richer.
  • If you like, you can add a pinch of saffron to the milk.
  • You can use white sugar, country sugar (Naatu Sarkarai) as well instead of brown sugar.
