How to make Nethili Meen Kulambu | Meen Kulambu

Nethili Meen Kulambu is one of the tastiest recipes among fish recipes. It is very simple to make and it takes only 20 mins to prepare the whole dish. This Nethili Meen kulambu goes amazing with plain rice. You can also have the Nethili Meen kulambu leftover as a side dish for appam, dosa and idly. Even it serves well when you have them as your dinner with dosa or appam.

I made this Nethili Meen kulambu when my mom bought it for me since I showed my interest to make this recipe. This is my all-time favourite recipe and my husband loves this too. That’s an amazing dish to serve with plain rice or with dinner.

Furthermore, you need not many spice powders for this Nethili Meen kulambu, as it contains only coriander powder and dried chillies. I have made this curry in a little thick consistency but you can either make it a little bit thick or thin. Be it thick or thin, it will satisfy your tummy. Ingredients for making Nethili Meen Kulambu

To make Paste

  • 1/2 cup Grated Coconut
  • 5 to 6 Garlic Cloves
  • 1/2 tbsp Peppercorns
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 3 Dried Red Chillies

To make Anchovies Slurry

  • 1 bowl Nethili Meen (Anchovies)
  • 1 lemon size Tamarind Pulp
  • Blended Coconut Paste
  • 3 to 4 tbsp Coriander Powder
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 2 tbsp Oil (Preferably Gingelly Oil)
  • Salt To Taste

Steps for making Nethili Meen Kulambu

First, roast the needed ingredients. Heat the pan and add 1 tbsp of oil. Then add grated coconut and dried red chillies. Roast them until they turn slight brown.

Roast the ingredients.

Once it roasted, let them come to room temperature. Then add them to the grinding jar.

Add grated coconut to the jar.

Then add turmeric powder, pepper corns and garlic cloves to the jar.

Add in the jar.

Blend them by adding a little amount of water.

Make a paste.

Next, add this paste to an Earthen pot or mud pot. Let the stove be off. You can turn it on once the mixture is over.

Add the paste to the pot.

Add coriander powder and tamarind pulp to the pot. Adjust the sour consistency according to your taste.

Add coriander powder to the paste.

Then turn on the stove and add few curry leaves to the slurry. Season it with the required amount of salt.

Turn on the stove and bring it to boil.

Bring the slurry to a boiling point. Then add cleaned Nethili Meen (Anchovies) to the slurry.

Add anchovies to the slurry and boil them.

Boil the Nethili Meen Kulambu on low flame until the oil releases on the sides. You can see the oil on the sides here.

Once the oil is separated, set the slurry side. Then heat oil in the tempering pan. Add Mustard seeds. Once it crackled, add curry leaves to them.

Add tempering ingredients.

Pour the ingredients over the Anchovies slurry.

Pour over the slurry.

Serve Nethili Meen Kulambu hot.

Quick Tips

  • You can also use rock salt to season it. But careful about the quantity.
  • Adjust the tamarind pulp and red chillies according to your taste.
