Pottukadalai Chutney – Step by Step instructions with pictures are seen in this blog.
Pottukadalai Chutney is a famous South Indian Chutney recipe that is seen in almost all restaurants. I have added two tbsp of grated coconut to this Pottukadalai Chutney but, you can either add coconut or skip them. This is very similar to the Green coconut chutney. We add all the ingredients similar to the green chutney and additionally we add roasted grams or Bengal grams.
Basically, am a hater of chutney varieties. But I always prefer chutney only because of my husband. He loves the chutney to the core and drinks the chutney with the dosa or idlis. This makes me prepare chutneys always. After trying several Chutney varieties, I want to try something different and new. This Chutney, I stumbled upon on Youtube. I came across many versions of Pottukadalai Chutney and out of temptation wanted to give it a try on. I was happy when it came perfectly for me. So let’s all try this recipe and let me know how it turns out for you.

- 2 Nos Shallots
- 3 Green Chillies

- 2 tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1 Sprig Curry Leaves
Steps for making Pottukadalai Chutney
Add all the ingredients to the mixer jar. Season it with the required amount of salt as well.
Then add some amount of water. Blend it to a chutney consistency. Neither too smooth nor too coarse.
Then transfer the chutney to a vessel and add the required amount of water. I have added two cups of water but you can adjust the water quantity as per your wish.
Next, heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Let it sizzle, then add curry leaves.
Then turn off the stove, add the chutney to the tempering ingredients.
Serve the Pottukadalai Chutney with Idly or Dosa.
- Make sure not to heat the Pottukadalai Chutney because it will stick to the bottom of the vessel.
- You can just temper it and mix them.
- You can also skip adding coconut and tamarind but I have added to get those ingredients flavour.
